Attacks Are Happening in "Gun-Free Zones"

In a recent Fox News report, Larry Pratt, the Executive Director of Gun owners of America, made an amazing statement ... the fact is that these attacks of gun violence have occurred in "gun free zones" like schools. Think about it? The attack in Aurora, Colorado was in a theater where guns were prohibited. The attack in Sandy Hook, Connecticut was in a gun free school zone. We are not seeing these kinds of things happening in places where the gunman would anticipate coming in direct contact with a "good guy" who is armed.

Back in December, I was talking with one of the Judges at the County Justice Center in Galveston, Texas, where I work. He pointed out to me that when one of these gunmen is faced with a firearm pointed at him he either stops or takes his own life. He pointed to the attack in the Portland, Oregon mall where a shooter's weapon jammed. The gunman unjammed his weapon and when he raised it to start shooting again, he was confronted by an armed civilian who was ready, willing and able to shoot. The attacker immediately shot himself.

The Judge in Galveston also pointed out that back in the 1920s the United States amended the Constitution to prohibit the sale of alcohol. We all know how effective that was! The criminals made millions of dollars selling "hooch" and many people, who were otherwise law abiding citizens, started violating the law of the land.

So what is the lesson for us in this?

  • The first is that by having well trained and knowledgeable citizens who can carry weapons, the instances of gun violence will decrease. And when such gun violence does happen, there will be a better chance there will be someone there to stop them.

  • The second is that if you ban good law abiding citizens from having guns, then the people who have these weapons will be the "bad guys" and that is not a good thing.

  • Third we should look at the experience of other countries and jurisdictions that have strict gun laws. Take the President's hometown (Chicago) as an example. It has one of the highest instances of gun violence in the country. And look at what is happening in Australia.
Therefore, as much as we all want to reach out and comfort those who have been impacted by gun violence, we need to remember that stricter gun control will increase and not decrease the occurrence of gun violence in our country.
