Looking Back at
a Year of Discussions

A year ago we began writing a weekly column for the Galveston County Daily News.  This has been lots of fun.  We greatly appreciate the opportunity and the discussion our columns have sparked.  We admit that a few of the responses made us smile; being miles apart from what was our intended topic.  Writing with a 500 word restriction forced us constantly to ponder what to keep and what to axe, accepting the fact that the comments would be probably be about the parts we cut out!  This editorial is no different.  Many times, much more depth was needed.  We attempted to choose both timely and subjects of regional interest.

Let’s do a quick review of the last twelve months:

• We started off talking about the difference between political “hype” and what voting records (actions) can tell us, noting Senator Cruz’s comment that some make symbolic votes which mean little while they secretly want things like an increase in the debt limit.  More recently a Texas Senator helped move a “compromise” that completely did away with any debt limit restriction until after the November 2014 election while saying he is a “conservative!”
  
  
• We wrote about immigration reform – looking for a balance that doesn’t reward illegal acts while encouraging legal immigration that welcomes those who will be productive citizens.  This debate still goes on and we understand there may be a move afoot to consider immigration reform in the House before the August recess.
  
  
• We also talked about the Ike Dike, making the case that under the constitution this is a federal responsibility and in the national interest to protect the refining industry, about 50% of which is on the Houston ship channel.  We called upon our Congressional delegation to find federal funding for this project.
  
  
• We addressed ObamaCare's failed promises, untruths, and how it is not “affordable” health care with premiums skyrocketing and deductibles going through the roof!
  
  
• We wrote about an abuse of governmental power where the Administration determines what laws it will enforce, where the Bureau of Land Management uses heavy-handed intimation measures, and where the Administration lied -- and then withheld information -- about the Benghazi terror attack.
  
  
• Perhaps the articles that garnered the most comments were the ones where we mentioned the importance of relying upon God and how the very foundation of our freedom rests on the Biblical principles upon which our Constitution is based.

We believe in freedom and are determined to do what we can to preserve it.  We believe in Devine intervention and are grateful for it.  We have observed our nation drifting away from absolutes and are concerned about it.  We see an increasing number of people willing to live on government assistance rather than applying themselves, improving their lot, and contributing to society and it saddens us.  We observe a pattern in politicians who try to deceive and lie to us and it makes us disheartened and distrustful.  But in all of this there is the seed of hope.  Light always overcomes darkness and truth always trumps falsehood.  It has been said “You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all of the time.”  As we start our second year, we hope these columns will shed new light and open the eyes of those who have heretofore not seen; and that they will stand beside us in our quest for freedom.
