The Bureau of Industry and Security’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is responsible for ensuring that agency programs make full and appropriate use of information technology. It supports the increased use of leading edge technology to enable BIS to carry out its mission more efficiently with improved IT products and services at the lowest cost.

The Office oversees development of policies and other guidance for agency-wide planning and use of IT through a capital asset management process centered around an IT Steering Committee (ITSC). This group reviews and evaluates proposed IT initiatives and requests for acquisitions, and also reviews and evaluates ongoing IT projects.

The Office coordinates the development and annual updates of OCIO-related information in the BIS IT Strategic Plan, the IT Capital Planning and Investment Control (CPIC) process, and develops coordinated responses to OMB, IG, GAO, and coordinates activities with the Federal CIO Council. The OCIO also provides principal advice, guidance and assistance to senior agency management to ensure agency IT resources are selected and managed in a manner that maximizes their value, manages risks, and is consistent with Federal laws and regulations including computer security and compliance.

In addition, this office provides Web services to the entire agency.
