The 2026 Election: Freedom or Despotism | |

| On May 28, 2024, I left my home in Galveston and drove to Giddings, TX. The next morning, I got up early and drove to Austin where I was to testify before the Senate State Affairs Committee about the countywide voting process. While waiting to be called to testify I experienced a massive heart attack and my body didn’t function for 30-40 minutes. Essentially, I was dead. The odds of surviving such an attack are less than ten percent. The odds of surviving and keeping one’s cognitive ability is less than one percent. At the exact moment I had the heart attack the Sherman County Clerk, Laura Rogers, was walking by the hearing room door with her daughter. Her daughter pointed out there was something going on and Laura jumped into action. She had just retired from serving over twenty years as a paramedic. She gave my lifeless body CPR and directed the help by the DPS troopers. I was a goner! A defibrillator was used on me several times at the Capitol and in the ambulance on the way to Del-Seton hospital. I won’t bore you with all the medical details other than to say I was kept in an induced coma for five days to guard against my brain swelling – Yes, I know, some may say I had a big head in the first place! My family was told I probably wouldn’t survive. The odds were not in my favor. The bad news is that I didn’t see any streets paved with gold. The good news is I didn’t see any fire either! I sincerely believe the Lord had His hand upon me the entire time. Like Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the TV series NCIS says, there are no coincidences! I believe God placed Laura Rogers at the doorway of that hearing room just when her expertise was needed. I further believe that the Lord didn’t want me to die at that point in my life and He has a plan for the time I have left on this earth. Because of all this, I encourage you to look at your own life experiences and see if you can identify times when the Lord protected you. Thank Him for them and celebrate them. For those of you who need healing, know that the Lord is still in the healing business. We will all die at some point, but the time and place is in His hands, not ours. He knows you personally and has a plan for you. Seek Him and His plan for you and then cooperate with Him. Enfold it knowing that the Lord is there with you in the midst of the challenges and trials you’re facing. You’re not alone. Finally, recognize that every day, every hour, and every minute is a gift from God. Cherish them and don’t squander them. Pray and trust the Lord to show you how He would have you spend your time, energy, and resources. | |||

In the Gospel of John, chapter 3 verse 30 John the Baptist tells his disciples "He [Jesus] must become greater and greater and I must become less and less." [NLT] This verse came to me over and over again as I struggled with whether to write this column and have it published. I didn't want the column to be about me, but about what the Lord did in me. I was simply the the vehicle the Lord choose to use. He is the one to be praised and glorified. If you are struggling or in a challenging situation, know that He is still in the miracle business and if He chose to do this in me, who is to say He won't choose to do something miraculous in, and through, you. Never, ever, forget He is alive and that you are never alone.
